We are looking for a Lead Product Design Engineer to bring their experience, creativity, organizational ability, and get-it-done attitude to the company’s product design, development and manufacturing group. You will convert market-driven product concepts into production designs that fulfill the requirements of our industry partners, are cost effective, environmentally sensitive and efficient to manufacture, assemble and ship. The right candidate will have experience in coaching, mentoring and directing a team of young technicians and engineers from start to finish in delivering a next generation product to market, and communicating with technical and non-technical people alike. 

Position Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) your responsibilities will include:

  • Ensure completeness of user-defined requirements and products specifications
  • Guide and perform relevant design activities including CAD, calculations, DFMEA, and the creation of manufacturing drawings
  • Direct, supervise and evaluate selected design activities performed by junior technical people or by sub-contractors
  • Direct product development activities including DVP&R, prototype assemblies, regulatory compliance and certification
  • Direct the internal manufacturing and assembly activities
  • Participate in failure analysis and reporting activities
  • Establish and maintain appropriate records and engineering change control processes
  • Develop and monitor project charters and Gantt charts, budgets and expenditure forecasts
  • Prepare project progress, resource allocation, budget control and risk management reports for presentation to the management team
  • Guide the development of a basic product development framework

Minimum qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering degree from a recognized university
  • Ten years workplace experience in commercial product design
  • Experience with structural analysis, heat transfer, thermodynamics, fluid dynamic, and control systems
  • Agility with CAD systems and FEA analysis tools
  • Knowledge of standard design practices, including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), and structured product development processes such as Requirement Documentation, Design Review, Verification and Validation Plans and Reports, DFMEA, design for manufacturing
  • Excellent knowledge of properties of materials, including insulating materials and synthetic and natural refrigerants
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing techniques and verification best practices
  • Team leadership experience and comfort with coaching a junior technical team
  • Strong collaborative, interpersonal and communications skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively on technical matters to explain and justify design decisions using calculations, analysis and written documentation
  • Demonstrated ability to positively engage with colleagues, management team, customers, and suppliers
  • Experience with MSOffice tools

The following attributes will be given preferential consideration:

  • Recognized Professional Engineer (PEng.) designation
  • Experience with refrigeration and HVAC technologies and products
  • Experience with mobile applications products
  • Experience with bill of material creation, procurement and component inventory management
